Kim Junsu is making headlines not only for winning his first-ever Baeksang Arts Award, but also for the unexpected comment he made during his acceptance speech that quickly divided public opinion online.
On May 8, the former TVXQ member took home the newly created Musical Acting Award at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards for his performance in the musical Beetlejuice. This year marked the first time the prestigious ceremony officially introduced a musical category in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Korean musical theater.
When his name was announced, Kim Junsu appeared genuinely surprised by the result. He admitted that he had not expected to win and therefore had not prepared an acceptance speech in advance.
Despite the unexpected victory, he still managed to leave audiences talking with a brief suggestion that immediately caught attention both inside the venue and online.
During his speech, Kim Junsu expressed hope that starting next year, the Musical Acting Award could potentially be divided into separate male and female categories.
The comment instantly sparked mixed reactions across social media and online communities. Some viewers agreed with his perspective, arguing that splitting the category could allow more performers to be individually recognized for their work in musical theater.

Others, however, preferred the award remaining gender-neutral, believing that acting performances should continue to compete equally regardless of gender. Some netizens also pointed out that the newly established category had only just been introduced this year, making the suggestion feel somewhat premature.
Regardless of the divided reactions, many fans still celebrated Kim Junsu for finally receiving recognition at one of Korea’s most prestigious entertainment award ceremonies after years of success in the musical industry.
Kim Junsu has built a strong reputation as one of Korea’s most successful musical actors, starring in productions such as Mozart!, Dracula, and Death Note. His award-winning role in Beetlejuice further solidified his status within the industry.
