On April 22, TV personality Hong Seok-cheon uploaded a video with the caption, “Bangkok Songkran accident. Safety comes first.” The footage shows the broadcaster assisting a woman who suddenly collapsed amid the crowded festivities.

He explained, “Songkran in Bangkok is a New Year water festival, but accidents happen every year. This year alone, reports say there were 191 deaths and hundreds injured.” He added that many incidents stem from traffic accidents, excessive drinking, and drug use.

While attending the event as a guest DJ, Hong Seok-cheon found himself in an unexpected emergency. He recalled, “While enjoying another festival with younger friends, a Thai woman collapsed due to alcohol and hypothermia. We moved her to a safer place, and thankfully it didn’t lead to a major accident.”

The video captures Hong Seok-cheon helping lift the woman and guiding others through the dense crowd to ensure she received assistance. His calm response and quick action were widely praised by viewers.

Hong Seok-cheon used the incident to emphasize the risks that can arise during high-energy festivals. “If you’re drinking and exposed to water for a long time while dancing and shouting, sudden shock or hypothermia can occur. Please be careful,” he warned.

He also shared a broader message: “There will be many festivals this summer. Above all, enjoy them safely. Youth is beautiful, but act responsibly.”

Originally rooted in Buddhist traditions, Songkran marks the Thai New Year starting April 13. What began as a ritual of pouring water over Buddha statues has evolved into a massive street celebration featuring water guns, music, and international tourists. The festival was officially recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023.

However, with its growing scale, safety concerns have increased, particularly involving alcohol consumption and large crowds.

Hong Seok-cheon currently runs the YouTube channel “Hong Seok-cheon’s Treasure Box,” with approximately 350,000 subscribers. His latest actions highlight not only his public presence but also his willingness to step in during real-life emergencies.
