A uniquely conceptual drama is gearing up to captivate viewers—SBS’s upcoming Friday-Saturday series My Royal Nemesis, set to premiere on May 8. Even before its release, the drama has been drawing attention with its striking concept and visually compelling still cuts of the cast.
My Royal Nemesis tells the story of Shin Seo Ri (Lim Ji Yeon), an unknown actress who becomes “villainous” after being possessed by the spirit of a notorious Joseon-era villain, and Cha Se Gye (Heo Nam Jun), a ruthless chaebol heir often described as a “monster created by capitalism.” Their relationship unfolds as a tense, war-like romance. The drama is directed by Han Tae Seop, known for Hot Stove League and Cheer Up, and written by rookie screenwriter Kang Hyun Joo, raising expectations for fresh synergy.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the drama is its unique blend of two contrasting timelines—Joseon Dynasty and 21st-century South Korea. Lim Ji Yeon’s character, Shin Seo Ri, is possessed by the spirit of Kang Dan Sim, a legendary villainess who once rose from low status to a powerful royal consort. Her awakening in the body of a modern-day struggling actress sets the stage for unpredictable developments and drives the core narrative.
Newly released stills on April 15 captured the moment this “Joseon villain” arrives in the modern world. Lim Ji Yeon’s wide-eyed, bewildered expression as she faces unfamiliar surroundings adds both humor and intrigue. Stripped momentarily of her villainous aura, her confusion in the face of modern life raises curiosity about how she will adapt.

Previously unveiled duo posters also sparked buzz. The visuals show Kang Dan Sim and Cha Se Gye facing each other in the same space but across different timelines. The mirrored composition between 18th-century Joseon and modern-day Korea enhances visual appeal while amplifying the subtle tension between the two characters. The tagline, “A villain meets a new world,” hints at a storyline that goes beyond simple romance, promising unpredictable twists.
Lim Ji Yeon, who first gained recognition through the film Obsessed, has built a diverse career with dramas like High Society. She notably impressed audiences with her chilling villain performance as Park Yeon Jin in the Netflix series The Glory. Having also showcased depth in historical dramas like The Tale of Lady Ok, she is expected to deliver another transformative performance by balancing both period and modern acting in this new role.
Heo Nam Jun is also expected to elevate his presence through this project. Known for his roles in Sweet Home, Your Honor, and A Hundred Memories, he has steadily built a strong filmography. With his charismatic image, he is set to portray Cha Se Gye as a cold and calculating third-generation chaebol.
As Shin Seo Ri—imbued with the spirit of a Joseon villain—enters Cha Se Gye’s efficiency-driven world, unexpected cracks begin to form. The clash between two characters shaped by entirely different eras is expected to be a major highlight of the drama.

Above all, anticipation is high for the “villainous synergy” between the two leads. The story of two infamous figures from different times colliding in one world—and the emotional evolution that follows—promises a fresh take on romance.
Even before its premiere, My Royal Nemesis has made a strong impression through its teasers and visuals. With its cross-era narrative, character transformations, and unpredictable plot, expectations are high for what new “world” it will bring to viewers.
SBS’s new Friday-Saturday drama My Royal Nemesis will premiere on May 8 at 9:50 PM.
