Sibling duo AKMU has finally addressed the real reason behind their departure from YG Entertainment after more than a decade, putting an end to speculation surrounding their decision.
During a recent appearance on a YouTube talk show, members Lee Chan-hyuk and Lee Su-hyun shared candid insights into their journey, showcasing their signature sibling chemistry while discussing their career transition. When asked why they chose to establish their own label, Lee Chan-hyuk responded simply, “The time had come.”

The conversation took a lighthearted turn when the host jokingly referred to their departure as “betrayal,” prompting Lee Chan-hyuk to laugh awkwardly before clarifying the situation. He emphasized that the duo had even renewed their contract once with YG Entertainment and expressed deep gratitude for everything they had learned during their time there.
However, he explained that as his role in music production expanded, his artistic identity became more defined. “As my producing scope grew, my musical color became clearer. The more detailed my preferences became, the more I felt a separation between the company’s direction and my own,” he stated.

Importantly, Lee Chan-hyuk stressed that their departure was fully supported by the company. According to him, YG Entertainment acknowledged the duo’s growth and encouraged their independence, saying that AKMU seemed capable of thriving on their own. “It’s the opposite of betrayal,” he firmly added.
Following their departure in December after 12 years with YG, AKMU established their independent label “Inspiration Source” and made their comeback with their 4th full-length album released on April 7. The move marks a new chapter for the duo, signaling greater creative freedom while maintaining the musical identity that has defined their career.
