moon scale chronicles review

The Chinese fantasy drama Moon Scale Chronicles (《月鱗綺紀》) has officially premiered, quickly climbing to the top of streaming charts while simultaneously igniting heated debate among viewers.

Starring Ju Jingyi and Chen Duling as dual female leads, alongside Zeng Shunxi and Tian Jiarui, the drama blends mystery, romance, and fantasy within a richly stylized world inspired by the classic Painted Skin mythology.

Set in the mysterious city of Luo’an, the story follows nine-tailed fox sisters—Ju Jingyi’s youthful Lu Wuyi and Chen Duling’s enigmatic Wu Wangyan—as they investigate supernatural crimes while searching for the rogue demon Xiao Wei. As conflicts between humans, demons, and gods intensify over the power of the Dragon Deity, the narrative unfolds through themes of sacrifice, destiny, and forbidden love.

Despite its strong debut and high streaming numbers on Youku, audience reactions have been sharply divided.

Much of the praise has centered on Chen Duling’s performance. Her portrayal of the cold and mysterious Wu Wangyan—accentuated by dark veils and elegant styling—has been widely applauded for elevating the drama’s visual and emotional depth. Many viewers считают her the standout presence, with some calling her transformation “mesmerizing.”

On the other hand, criticism has largely been directed at the drama’s storytelling and execution. Viewers have pointed out issues such as a confusing narrative structure, excessive use of beauty filters that diminish realism, and uneven acting performances—particularly from Ju Jingyi and co-star Tian Jiarui, whose emotional delivery some found lacking.

As one viewer commented, “The visuals are stunning, but the story feels fragmented and hard to follow.”

Currently ranking behind other popular titles on trending charts, including competing fantasy dramas, Moon Scale Chronicles faces a critical test: whether it can overcome early criticism through stronger plot development in upcoming episodes.

With its striking aesthetics but controversial reception, the series stands as another example of how high-budget fantasy dramas can captivate audiences visually—yet still struggle to fully satisfy them narratively.
