For years, many believed that Shu Qi and her husband, Stephen Fung, chose not to have children, preferring to enjoy their life as a couple. However, the truth turned out to be far more painful. The The Assassin star emotionally shared, “We’ve always wanted a child it just hasn’t happened the way we hoped.”

During a talk show appearance, Shu Qi revealed that once she turned 41, she began going to extreme lengths in hopes of conceiving. She even paused her acting career for an entire year, turning down all film offers to focus solely on improving her health.

Known for having severe allergies, Shu Qi had to drastically change her lifestyle. She gave up her favorite foods like hot pot and mangoes, avoided raw, cold, and spicy dishes, maintained strict sleep schedules, and even controlled her body fat to around 22% to prepare for pregnancy.

In her pursuit of motherhood, she turned to both traditional Chinese medicine and Western treatments. She underwent acupuncture three times a week and consumed herbal medicine twice daily for six months. In addition, she repeatedly tried ovulation induction injections and underwent multiple rounds of IVF.

Unfortunately, the couple faced disappointment after disappointment. Doctors eventually concluded that due to her age and physical condition, Shu Qi’s chances of natural pregnancy were extremely low and even IVF offered only minimal hope.

According to QQ, Shu Qi had once considered freezing her eggs back in 2009 at age 33. At the time, she shared that although she wasn’t ready to become a mother yet, she wanted to preserve the option in case she changed her mind later. However, her busy schedule prevented her from following through. By the time she entered her 40s and got married, her body was no longer as accommodating.

From age 41 to 49, Shu Qi spent nine years desperately trying to conceive. She revealed that during hormone treatments, her body became swollen, her face broke out severely, and her emotions grew unstable. She even experienced irritability and depression, admitting she couldn’t bear to look at herself in the mirror during that time.

Understanding her struggles, even superstar Andy Lau stepped in to help by recommending top fertility specialists in Hong Kong. However, despite these efforts, her wish to become a mother remained unfulfilled.

Throughout it all, Stephen Fung never pressured her about having children. He turned down numerous opportunities to stay by her side, adjusting his lifestyle alongside hers quitting alcohol and smoking, and supporting her through every step of the journey.

Whenever Shu Qi felt discouraged, he comforted her by saying, “Even without children, our life is still complete. The person I married is you whether we have kids or not doesn’t matter.”

By 2024, the couple decided to stop treatments and began considering adoption instead. Shu Qi also shared that she now regrets pushing herself so hard and putting her body through such suffering for so long.

Although she couldn’t fulfill her dream of giving birth, Shu Qi continues to be admired not only for her successful career but also for having a deeply supportive partner. Beyond acting, she has also earned recognition as a director, even winning Best Director at the Busan International Film Festival with her debut project.
