In July 2022, a horrifying incident occurred during a concert by the group Mirror, when a 600kg LED screen suddenly fell onto the stage, striking multiple performers.
Li Kai Yan suffered severe injuries to his head and neck, including a brain hemorrhage, fractures in his cervical spine (C4), and dislocation of the C5 vertebra. He underwent 10 major surgeries, including nerve reconstruction and spinal correction, to survive. Although he miraculously escaped death, the dancer was left permanently paralyzed from the neck down.
Four Years Later: A Life Forever Changed
Now, four years after the accident, Li Kai Yan remains hospitalized, continuing long-term treatment for his injuries. Despite trying various rehabilitation methods, including physical therapy and experimental nerve stimulation implants, there has been no significant recovery in his lower body.
Doctors have reportedly confirmed that he will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Recently, he has begun training with an electric wheelchair and using a support stick to build upper body strength. Adding to the heartbreak, multiple sources revealed that Li Kai Yan and his longtime girlfriend, To Chi Ching, have called off their engagement and gone their separate ways. The couple had planned to marry in late 2022, but the accident forced them to postpone indefinitely.
On March 14, netizens noticed that To Chi Ching had removed Li Kai Yan’s name from her social media profile. Several videos of the couple were also deleted. A mutual acquaintance spoke out in her defense, stating: “She truly did her best. She sacrificed her career and youth to care for him after the accident. People shouldn’t criticize her for choosing to leave.”
Career and Future Cut Short
Before the accident, Li Kai Yan was considered one of Hong Kong’s most promising dancers and choreographers. He had worked with top-tier artists and gained recognition for his technical skill and captivating performances. He also participated in a major survival show in 2018, ranking in the Top 55, before becoming a main dancer for Mirror.
The accident not only ended his career, but also drastically altered the trajectory of his life. Despite the severity of the incident, controversy continues to surround the legal outcome.
Three major contractors responsible for the stage production were acquitted after three years of investigation. Li Kai Yan’s family has expressed strong anger, stating they cannot accept the verdict. The family has since filed an appeal, demanding compensation of 73,000 HKD per month (approximately 9,310 USD). However, the contractors have refused to pay, leaving the case in a prolonged legal deadlock.
