The romantic drama Extraordinary Girl is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about films in Macau after its recent release. Despite receiving little attention before hitting theaters, the film has unexpectedly sparked a wave of discussion thanks to its bold 18+ storyline and emotionally intense love triangle.
According to China Times, Extraordinary Girl premiered in Macau and Taiwan on March 5 and immediately began attracting audiences. The romantic film soon climbed to the top of the box office rankings, approaching HKD 1 million in revenue in less than a week. Due to the strong demand, several cinema chains have reportedly added additional screenings to accommodate moviegoers eager to watch the buzzworthy title.
Directed by Xu Xin Xian, Extraordinary Girl tells a coming-of-age story that unfolds across three different cities: Macau, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The narrative follows the emotional journeys of three female couples at different stages of life, exploring how identity, relationships, and personal choices evolve over time. The story begins with the confusion and awakening of a 17-year-old discovering her feelings for the first time, continues with the self-discovery of a 22-year-old studying abroad, and ends with the perspective of a 34-year-old navigating adulthood and complicated relationships.
One of the film’s most discussed plotlines centers on the characters Han Ning, Chen Meng Qi, and Deng Tao. Their complicated dynamic gradually develops into a painful love triangle, leaving the characters uncertain about their future while confronting their own emotions. Actress Han Ning, who plays a key role in the story, previously graduated from the prestigious Taipei First Girls High School before continuing her studies at National Yang Ming University. Known for her pure and youthful image, she has received recognition in the industry and was nominated for Best Actress in a Short Film at the 60th Golden Bell Awards.
In Extraordinary Girl, Han Ning shares several intimate scenes with co-star Deng Tao. The actress revealed that the production hired a professional intimacy coordinator to guide the filming process. With the coordinator’s help, the actors gradually built trust and rehearsed the choreography of each scene before filming.
“We practiced every movement with the director beforehand, so when the cameras started rolling we could focus more on the emotions and storytelling,” Han Ning explained.
Beyond its romantic storyline, Extraordinary Girl also touches on deeper themes related to identity, emotional vulnerability, and the labels society places on individuals.
