zhang linghe southeast asia comment controversy

Chinese actor Zhang Linghe recently faced backlash from international fans after a comment he made on a variety show was interpreted as disrespectful toward Southeast Asians.

The actor, who has been gaining attention for his role in the drama “Zhu Yu” (逐玉), appeared on a program alongside his co-star Tian Xiwei. During one segment, the two actors played a game where they drew portraits of each other on small whiteboards.

When reacting to Tian Xiwei’s drawing of him, Zhang Linghe jokingly commented, “I feel like I was born in Southeast Asia.” The remark quickly sparked criticism online, with some viewers interpreting the statement as implying a negative stereotype.

The clip soon circulated across social media platforms, where many Southeast Asian users expressed disappointment and frustration.

As the controversy grew, Zhang Linghe addressed the issue directly through Instagram. In a 112-word statement written in both Chinese and English, the actor apologized for the comment and acknowledged that it made some viewers uncomfortable.

He wrote, “I sincerely apologize for the words I said during the variety show that caused discomfort to many people.

Zhang Linghe emphasized that he had no intention of discriminating against any culture, adding that every culture possesses its own unique charm.

The actor also expressed gratitude toward his Southeast Asian fans, noting that many have supported him over the years by leaving messages, writing letters, and even traveling to China to see him.

“I truly appreciate the support from fans in Southeast Asia. I would never want anyone who supports me to feel hurt because of my words,” he said.

Following the controversy, the production team behind the program reportedly decided to remove the controversial line from the broadcast.

Despite the incident, Zhang Linghe continues to receive attention for his growing popularity in the Chinese drama industry, particularly through “Zhu Yu”, where he stars opposite Tian Xiwei.
