STAYC member Sieun is set to take on the role of female lead Song-hwa in the musical Seopyeonje , which opens on April 30. Her casting drew attention as an idol’s first challenge on the musical stage, but debate soon followed after details of the production’s casting structure were revealed.

At the center of the controversy is a newly introduced “split casting” system for the role of Song-hwa in this season’s production. Traditionally, a single actress portrayed Song-hwa throughout her entire life, from youth to old age. However, for performances featuring Sieun, the production has assigned pansori singer Jung Eun-hye to portray the elderly version of Song-hwa separately.

This decision prompted criticism from some musical theater audiences, who questioned whether the production altered the structure of the show to reduce the burden on a specific cast member. Others raised concerns over fairness, pointing out that the exception was applied only to certain performances. There were also worries that dividing the role could weaken immersion, particularly during the climactic pansori scenes that are central to the musical.

Sieun’s own remarks to fans further fueled the debate. In messages shared during fan communication, she commented that “it would be difficult to convincingly portray a woman in her 70s with my face,” adding that being the youngest-ever Song-hwa placed significant pressure on her. Some musical fans responded critically, stating that part of an actor’s profession is to convincingly portray age through acting and makeup.

In response, production company PAGE1 denied allegations of preferential treatment. The producers explained that the casting approach was an intentional directorial choice aimed at expanding opportunities for younger performers and presenting Song-hwa’s character in a more layered and dimensional way. Seopyeonje will run from April 30 to July 19 at Gwanglim Art Center BBCH Hall in Seoul.
