Korean film legend Ahn Sung-ki was laid to rest on January 9th, as a constellation of fellow actors gathered at Myeongdong Cathedral to pay their final respects. The solemn farewell was a powerful reminder of Ahn’s towering legacy in Korean cinema.

The funeral proceedings began early in the morning with a mass at St. Mary’s Hospital between 6:30 and 7 a.m. The late actor’s body was then transported by limousine to the cathedral, where the main funeral mass and farewell ceremony were held. Notably, while actors did not carry the portrait from the hospital, Jung Woo-sung later held the memorial portrait during the farewell service, marking an emotional moment.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the hearse arrived at Myeongdong Cathedral. Due to the sacred nature of the venue, the cathedral imposed strict restrictions on media access, allowing limited photography and video from designated areas only. The main mass began at 8 a.m., followed by the farewell ceremony in the Familia Chapel at 9 a.m., lasting about 40 minutes.

Only a handful of media personnel were allowed inside to cover the ceremony, ensuring the privacy of Ahn’s family, friends, and industry colleagues. After the service, the procession resumed, with pallbearers including Sul Kyung-gu, Park Chul-min, Yoo Ji-tae, Park Hae-il, Jo Woo-jin, and Joo Ji-hoon some of the most respected names in Korean film honoring Ahn’s legacy with their presence.

In a heartfelt tribute, Lee Jung-jae presented a medal during the service, symbolizing Ahn Sung-ki’s invaluable contribution to Korean culture and cinema. These gestures, performed by some of the most prominent figures in the industry, emphasized the deep respect and admiration Ahn commanded throughout his illustrious career.

His agency, Artist Company, expressed gratitude to the press for their respectful coverage throughout the mourning period, stating, “We thank you for your orderly and considerate reporting during the funeral. Please continue to honor the late Ahn Sung-ki with dignity until his final journey.”

Ahn Sung-ki’s passing marks the end of an era, but the outpouring of love and reverence from Korea’s top actors underscores the indelible mark he has left behind.
