Beloved Japanese actress Masami Nagasawa has officially announced her marriage, sending waves of surprise across Japan’s entertainment industry and delighting fans.

On January 1 (local time), Japanese media reported that Nagasawa’s agency, Toho Entertainment, released an official statement confirming the news. The agency said, “We would like to inform you that Masami Nagasawa has gotten married. We sincerely apologize for the sudden announcement and would appreciate your warm support as you watch over her.”

Nagasawa’s husband is film director Takeshi Fukunaga, who is five years her senior. In her own statement, the actress shared her thoughts on the new chapter in her life, saying that the two plan to support one another, cherish their everyday lives, and move forward carefully and sincerely, step by step. She also asked the public to continue looking upon the couple with kindness, noting that they still have much to learn.

Masami Nagasawa rose to prominence after winning the Grand Prix at the 5th Toho Cinderella Audition and made her film debut in Pyrokinesis. She has since become one of Toho Entertainment’s flagship stars, with the agency being an affiliate of Toho, one of Japan’s leading film distribution companies. Nagasawa achieved nationwide stardom through Crying Out Love in the Center of the World (2004) and went on to build a strong reputation as a versatile actress through projects such as 50 First Kisses, Mother, Kingdom, and the The Confidence Man JP series.

Her husband, Takeshi Fukunaga, made his feature film directing debut in 2015 with Out of My Hand. He has since expanded his career internationally, directing episodes of major drama series including Shōgun (Season 1, Episode 7) and Tokyo Vice (Season 2, Episodes 5 and 6). He is also set to release his latest project, 12 12 12, later this year.
