On December 22, Kim Byung-woo sat down for an interview in Sogyeok-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, in connection with his upcoming Netflix film The Great Flood. The movie marks his first project released since tying the knot with Ham Eun-jung, making the conversation especially meaningful.
The Great Flood is an SF disaster blockbuster set on the final day of Earth after a catastrophic flood. The story follows a desperate fight for survival inside a submerged apartment building, where humanity’s last hope hangs by a thread. The film stars Kim Da-mi and Park Hae-soo in leading roles.
Speaking about his wife’s reaction to the film, Kim Byung-woo said, “She said it was fun. But from her position, it wouldn’t have been easy to say it wasn’t.” He added with a laugh that watching the movie together was entertaining in its own way, noting, “Since it’s on Netflix, we watched it in different language dubs Japanese, then French. That was fun too.”
Kim Byung-woo also addressed the couple’s unexpectedly sudden marriage announcement, which came as a surprise to many. Reflecting on the timing, he explained, “I thought it was something that would eventually have to be accepted. Both of us were extremely busy at the time, so it felt like we rushed through it. A lot of people around us were very surprised.”
Kim Byung-woo and Ham Eun-jung officially married on November 30 in a private ceremony attended only by close family members and acquaintances. The couple reportedly met naturally through gatherings within the film industry.
Kim Byung-woo rose to prominence after winning the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best New Director for The Terror Live in 2013. He later directed PMC: The Bunker and the 300-billion-won blockbuster Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, which was released in July this year.
Ham Eun-jung also shared her own heartfelt message following the wedding. On December 4, she wrote on her personal account, “I worried that my preparations weren’t enough since I was busy filming a drama despite my knee not being fully healed. But thanks to everyone’s generosity and support, everything ended happily it felt like a miracle.”
Following her marriage, Ham Eun-jung quickly returned to work. She currently stars in MBC’s new drama The First Man, which premiered on December 15. In the series, she takes on a challenging dual role as twin sisters Oh Jang-mi and Ma Seo-rin.
The First Man tells the story of a woman who lives another person’s life for revenge and another who steals someone else’s life out of ambition, portraying a dangerous clash between two women bound by fate. Ham Eun-jung’s nuanced performance has been praised for fully embodying two characters with dramatically different lives, marking a strong post-marriage comeback.
