The popular Chinese romance drama Sniper Butterfly, starring Chen Yanxi (Michelle Chen) and Zhou Keyu, has hit a nerve with viewers following its most recent episode. The series, which has captivated audiences with its forbidden sister-brother love storyline, recently crossed over 27,000 in heat index, but its latest emotional twist left many fans frustrated and demanding answers.
In the episode, Chen Yanxi’s character Cen Jin reveals she lied to Li Wu (played by Zhou Keyu) about their plans to move to the U.S. together. The revelation leads to a tearful breakup, abruptly shifting the story’s tone from sweet romance to heartbreaking separation.

The intense fan reaction prompted screenwriter Xu Yitian to address the backlash on social media, offering insight into the controversial plot development. He explained that the characters’ conflict is rooted not simply in age difference, but in maturity gaps and power imbalance that often accompany such relationships.
“Li Wu’s love is intense and unwavering—his world crumbles when Cen Jin leaves,” Xu wrote. “For her, the breakup is an act of painful rationality, shaped by moral pressure and concern for their future.”

The writer emphasized that the heartbreak is mutual, just expressed differently. “Li Wu feels like he’s chasing an illusion, while Cen Jin’s pain is like being cut by a dull knife. There’s no question of who loves more,” he added.
The drama, directed by Taiwanese director Huang Tianren and co-written by Xu Yitian (known for Hikaru no Go), underwent significant changes from its original script. In fact, the team spent three days revamping the narrative, replacing a dual timeline (2016 and 2024) with a non-linear structure to add emotional depth.
Despite the critical acclaim for its emotional realism, many fans were upset by the abrupt shift in tone. Xu tried to comfort them, saying the overarching theme of the series is: “Separation is for a better reunion.” He also urged fans not to blame the actors for the heartbreak: “If you feel hurt, don’t curse the sister or the brother—blame the writer!”
As the story continues to unfold, fans remain divided—but one thing is certain: Sniper Butterfly has struck a chord with its audience, for better or worse.
