According to Oriental Daily, Tony Leung revealed the news during a talk session at the Singapore International Film Festival on November 29. He shared that his schedule for next year is already packed, with several film projects and a long-form drama in the works. “This role is unlike anything I’ve ever played it’s incredibly dark,” Leung said, adding to the intrigue.
Leung’s last television role was in Ode to Gallantry (1989). After leaving the network, he transitioned to film, eventually becoming one of Asia’s most celebrated actors with a prominent international career. During his time at TVB, he built an iconic portfolio with hits like The Duke of Mount Deer (1984), Police Cadet, The Yang’s Saga, and New Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre (1986).

Despite his long career, Leung has never taken up directing, admitting it doesn’t suit him. “I prefer to fulfill my duty as an actor to help the director express their vision,” he stated.
Leung also opened up about his difficult childhood. Raised in a troubled household, he often came home to scenes of his father gambling, drinking, and fighting with his mother over money. Eventually, his mother divorced and raised Leung and his younger sister on her own. At just 15, Leung dropped out of school to help support the family, taking jobs like newspaper delivery, product promoter, and shop assistant.

By age 19, he found a relatively stable job in an electronics store. Yet, uncertain about his future, Leung was persuaded by his close friend Stephen Chow to quit and audition for TVB’s acting program. Chow’s vivid description of a bright future convinced him to take the leap.
The decision was met with fierce opposition from his mother. “I still remember her exact words: ‘You ungrateful brat. Don’t expect a single cent from me,’” Leung recalled.
Looking back, Leung said acting is the only profession where he felt he could truly excel. “Acting was a reckless decision but it was the only one that felt right. Life is about charging headfirst into the difficult path, constantly being reborn.”
