fan bingbing golden horse best actress

Fan Bingbing has once again made history. On November 22, at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards in Taipei, the Chinese actress won Best Actress for her powerful performance in the film Green Night, her first major acting accolade since the 2016 Golden Rooster win for I Am Not Madame Bovary.

The prestigious victory moved Fan to tears. Though absent from the ceremony, she watched the broadcast live and received a phone call from director Tsai Ming-Liang on stage. Moments later, video footage captured Fan sobbing emotionally backstage while her team called to congratulate her.

This win marks her second Golden Horse title, after clinching Best Supporting Actress in 2007 for The Matrimony, officially elevating her to “Double Golden Queen” status across China’s two major film awards.
In Green Night, Fan took on the

role of Feng Yin, a rural Chinese woman in Malaysia gifted with shamanic powers. She completely transformed her appearance—donning a bare face, sun-drenched skin, and rustic clothing—rendering herself nearly unrecognizable to audiences. Director Tsai originally hesitated to cast a celebrity, wanting to preserve the film’s grounded, authentic atmosphere. But Fan personally reached out, insisting she audition.

According to Tsai, she won him over with a candid vow: “I’m ready to destroy my image for this film.” Fan immersed herself fully—studying Malaysian rural life for months, farming in the fields, learning local dialects, and rehearsing village rituals to embody her character.
“This role changed me profoundly,” Fan shared. “Feng Yin connected me to the soul of rural people and their land.”

This award is not just a professional milestone—it’s also a symbolic comeback. Fan’s career was nearly derailed in 2018 by a high-profile tax evasion scandal, resulting in a 128 million USD penalty and her virtual blacklist from Chinese entertainment. Despite this, she refused to quit, working quietly across international projects, including in Korea and Malaysia, and even being named Malaysia’s tourism ambassador.

Fan Bingbing’s tearful win at Golden Horse 2025 is more than just recognition—it’s a powerful reminder of resilience, transformation, and the enduring strength of artistry.
