According to reports from Collider and other U.S. media outlets on November 20 (local time), Squid Game: America, a new series developed by acclaimed director David Fincher, is set to begin production in a few months.
Squid Game: America has been listed on the Film & Television Industry Alliance (FTIA) website, with production scheduled to start on February 26, 2026, in Los Angeles and other locations in California. David Fincher is named as the director, and intriguingly, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk and Kim Ji-yeon of Firstman Studio are listed as producers.
However, this project will not be a direct remake. Instead, it is planned as a spin-off set in the same universe. While it retains the grim and suspenseful survival-game concept, it will explore how such deadly games unfold in an American setting, offering a distinct cultural and narrative twist compared to its Korean counterpart.

Adding to the buzz, Hollywood star Cate Blanchett who appeared in Squid Game Season 3 is reportedly attached to the project.
Though Fincher himself has not confirmed involvement, Collider emphasized that this is the most concrete update on the U.S. version of Squid Game in months. If filming begins as planned in early 2026, the likely release window is sometime in 2028, potentially around Christmas, mirroring the launch periods of Squid Game Seasons 1 and 2.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk previously stated in a June interview after Season 3’s release that “there won’t be another season.” While acknowledging that Gi-hun’s daughter is studying in the U.S. and even mentioning Cate Blanchett, he clarified this wasn’t a teaser for another season.

Regarding the spin-off rumors, including his role as director and Blanchett’s casting, Hwang firmly denied them, stating, “The ending wasn’t meant to set up a U.S. version.” However, he did express admiration for David Fincher, saying he would seriously consider any offer from him.
David Fincher is best known for directing critically acclaimed films such as Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and The Social Network. He has been nominated three times for Best Director at the Academy Awards, solidifying his place as one of Hollywood’s most influential filmmakers.
As of now, Netflix has not released an official statement regarding the American spin-off.
