According to legal sources on November 3, the prosecution made the sentencing request during a final hearing held at the Incheon District Court’s Criminal Division 11. The accused, a man in his 30s identified only as Officer A, is a former police lieutenant who has been charged with leaking official secrets and other violations. His sentencing is scheduled for December 17.

The incident dates back to October 2023, when Officer A allegedly photographed and sent a confidential investigative progress report related to Lee Sun Kyun’s suspected drug use to two journalists, including one identified as B.

The leaked document, originally compiled by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency’s Narcotics Investigation Unit on October 18, 2023, included highly sensitive information such as names, criminal records, professions, and other personal data of individuals linked to the case.

An entertainment media outlet received the material from reporter B and published the redacted report and its contents on December 28, 2023, the day after Lee Sun Kyun tragically passed away amid mounting public scrutiny and mental stress.

Following the leak, Officer A was dismissed from his position and later filed a lawsuit against the Incheon Police Chief, challenging the termination. However, he lost the case in the first trial.

In a related development, a prosecutorial investigator in his 40s from the Incheon District Prosecutors’ Office, identified as Officer C, is also facing trial for allegedly providing similar confidential updates about the investigation to a local newspaper reporter.

The breach of official secrecy in such a high-profile and sensitive case has sparked widespread outrage, with public concern growing over the systemic mishandling of private information by law enforcement personnel. The verdict next month is expected to set a precedent for how future violations of this nature are handled.
