Actress Bao Shangen has come under intense public scrutiny after reports emerged that her studio forced a driver to write a handwritten letter of apology, complete with a fingerprint, over allegations of stealing fan gifts.
The controversy began when fans noticed their gifts — which Bao had discarded — appearing online. Instead of clarifying the misunderstanding, Bao Shangen’s studio allegedly accused the driver of theft and claimed he had sold the items to fans. They then compelled him to issue a written confession, a move that enraged the public for its “inhumane and authoritarian” handling.

Fans Reveal the Real Story: “He Never Sold Anything”
However, Bao Shangen’s own fans soon came forward to defend the driver, revealing that there was no theft or resale involved. According to them, the driver had merely collected the discarded gifts and, feeling sorry for the fans who had spent money, offered to return the items if they wished — for free.
“He didn’t steal or sell anything. He just asked if anyone wanted their gifts back,” one fan wrote. “He was trying to help, not profit.”
Several fans also testified that the driver was known for being trustworthy and discreet, often taking extra care to protect Bao Shangen’s privacy. “He never leaked her location or personal details. Turning around and accusing him of theft is cruel,” another fan commented.
The incident has since spiraled into one of the most discussed topics on Chinese social media, with hashtags like #BaoShangenAbuseScandal and #JusticeForTheDriver trending on Weibo. Many former supporters have withdrawn their support, calling the actress “two-faced and power-hungry.”

Even more disturbingly, fans who initially defended the driver were reportedly pressured into publicly apologizing to Bao Shangen the following day for “damaging her reputation.” This has only deepened anger online, as many see it as further proof of the studio’s attempt to silence dissent.
Once seen as a refined and talented performer, Bao Shangen now faces what some describe as the worst backlash of her career. Critics have accused her of class arrogance and moral hypocrisy, saying her response reflects a disturbing lack of empathy.
“Crushing an ordinary worker just to protect your image — this is not how a real star behaves,” one viral comment read.
With public trust crumbling and her fanbase rapidly shrinking, it remains to be seen whether Bao Shangen or her management will issue a formal apology.
