The year-end music festival MBC Gayo Daejejeon is marking its 20th anniversary with a fresh new face and a bold new era.

After Girls’ Generation’s Yoona stepped down following a decade as the show’s beloved MC, the production team has announced her successor: Annie, a rising rookie idol from the co-ed group ALLDAY PROJECT.

MBC Gayo Daejejeon has long been Korea’s most iconic New Year’s Eve music festival, airing live every December 31 and welcoming the New Year with spectacular performances.

This year marks the show’s 20th edition since adopting its current name in 2005 following its earlier formats such as MBC 10 Singers Contest and Korean Song Festival that date back to 1966.

For the milestone year, producers sought a “fresh yet symbolic choice.” Chief PD Jang Woo-sung told Sports Chosun: “After Yoona decided to step down, we had long discussions about who could carry the next decade of Gayo Daejejeon. Since K-pop is now a global movement, the new host had to be a ‘new-generation artist the world is watching.’ Annie felt like the most natural choice.”

Despite debuting just six months ago, Annie has already made waves as one of K-pop’s fastest-rising rookies. Her group ALLDAY PROJECT dominated charts with hits like “Famous” and “Wicked,” earning her the title of “monster rookie.”

According to PD Jang, Annie impressed the team with her intelligence, stage charisma, and leadership: “She has proven herself through her work. In just half a year, she’s developed her own color that’s what makes her stand out as a true artist of this generation.”

Annie’s appointment sparked mixed reactions online due to her high-profile family background – she is reportedly the eldest daughter of a Shinsegae Group executive.

PD Jang, however, dismissed concerns, saying her selection was based purely on merit: “She’s an artist who’s proving herself through her actions. We were impressed by how she’s carving her identity independently, not through her background.”

This year’s MBC Gayo Daejejeon will feature a three-host lineup:

  • Minho (SHINee) – bringing professionalism and charisma,
  • Hwang Min-hyun – returning to broadcasting after military service,
  • Annie (ALLDAY PROJECT) – infusing fresh energy and youthful flair.

“Annie’s confidence and presence will complement the team’s chemistry perfectly,” PD Jang said. “As always, the festival will remain warm and family-friendly, closing 2025 and welcoming 2026 with unity and joy.”

The MBC Gayo Daejejeon has been a holiday staple for Korean families for nearly six decades. This year’s broadcast promises to honor tradition while highlighting the modern spirit of K-pop led by a new generation that’s ready to carry the torch.

The 2025 MBC Gayo Daejejeon will air live on December 31.
