A 47-year-old man has died in a shocking accident involving the explosion of an e-cigarette battery, marking the first recorded fatality of its kind in Thailand.

According to local media reports on October 22 (local time), the incident occurred on October 18 near a drainage area of a reservoir in the Mueang Nong Bua Lam Phu district, located in northeastern Thailand.

The man had gone fishing and was later found dead with severe injuries to his face, left hand, and chest. At first, authorities considered the possibility of foul play, but after an autopsy and investigation, the cause of death was determined to be an explosion from an e-cigarette battery.

The body showed clear signs of burns and soot, especially around the mouth and hand. The mouth was torn both internally and externally, and the left hand sustained the most damage, with torn flesh and embedded metal fragments.

The autopsy report confirmed that three pieces of metal lodged in the victim’s chest were parts of the exploded e-cigarette. The powerful blast sent shrapnel through his lungs and heart, causing fatal internal injuries.

Local police in Nong Bua Lam Phu expressed condolences to the victim’s family and emphasized the dangers of e-cigarettes, particularly defective batteries. They urged the public to be aware of the potential risks posed by these devices.

While this is the first fatal case involving an e-cigarette explosion in Thailand, similar incidents have been reported in the United States.

In January 2019, a 24-year-old man in Tarrant County, Texas, died from a ruptured carotid artery caused by an e-cigarette explosion. X-ray images revealed vape device fragments embedded in his neck.

In May 2018, another fatal case occurred in St. Petersburg, Florida, when a 38-year-old man was killed by an e-cigarette explosion while vaping. Two pieces of shrapnel penetrated his skull, and his body found in a burning bedroom had burns covering 80% of the surface.

These cases highlight the serious dangers associated with vape device malfunctions and underscore the need for stricter safety regulations and increased consumer awareness.
