Japanese entertainment fans are in shock after reports surfaced that Kazuya Kamenashi (39), former member of KAT-TUN, and actress Minami Tanaka (38) have broken up — just as many believed marriage was on the horizon. The report, published by Josei Seven Plus on October 22, claimed that the once “perfect couple” had decided to part ways after “reaching their emotional limit.”

According to Josei Seven Plus, the two had been in a serious, marriage-oriented relationship, but subtle rifts began to grow over time. Sources revealed that Kamenashi, who often goes out drinking socially — both for work and relaxation — gradually found himself constrained by Tanaka’s increasing need for control.
The outlet reported,
“Small things began to pile up, creating a chill between them. After several discussions, they decided to end their relationship recently.”
Their breakup comes 1 year and 10 months after their romance was first reported, marking a major turning point for both stars as they approach 40.

The couple first connected during a joint interview for the beauty magazine MAQUIA in September 2023, where their shared love for beauty, pets, and self-care quickly drew them closer. Their relationship was publicly revealed on New Year’s Day 2024, and notably, neither of their agencies denied the report — signaling a rare degree of openness in the Japanese entertainment industry.

They later co-starred in the TV Asahi drama “Destiny” during the spring 2024 season, further fueling speculation that wedding bells were near. Although no photos of them together were ever published, tabloids consistently described their relationship as stable and affectionate.
The breakup appears to have been influenced by Kamenashi’s demanding career schedule. Following KAT-TUN’s official disbandment in March 2025, he also left STARTO Entertainment, marking a new chapter in his solo career.

Despite his departure, the group is set to reunite for a one-night farewell concert at Chiba’s ZOZO Marine Stadium on November 8, a show expected to draw thousands of longtime fans.
An industry insider told Josei Seven Plus:
“*For fans, this concert is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see ‘Idol Kamenashi’ one last time. He’s completely focused on preparations — meetings, rehearsals, everything. Naturally, that created distance between him and Tanaka. But he’s always been known as someone who puts fans first. Tanaka understood that, even as she struggled with it.*”
The source also suggested that offers for new drama and film projects have been pouring in for Kamenashi since leaving his agency, leaving him little personal time.
Furthermore, Kamenashi reportedly suffered emotional stress in early 2024 when some fans reacted harshly to the news of his relationship with Tanaka. Despite that backlash, he continued to work tirelessly as both an actor and musician. His breakup, some speculate, was partly an act of prioritizing his fans ahead of his symbolic final live performance.

Online reactions have been divided — with some expressing sympathy for Minami Tanaka, who has often faced societal pressure regarding marriage and age, while others empathized with Kamenashi’s struggle to balance love, fame, and career.
One Weibo user wrote,
“*She loved him sincerely, but perhaps being with an idol means sharing him with millions of fans. That’s not easy.*”
Another commented,
“At 38, she’s criticized for not marrying, and when she breaks up, she’s pitied. Let her live freely.”
Despite the emotional end, both stars continue to shine in their fields. Kamenashi is preparing for his farewell KAT-TUN concert and exploring new acting projects for 2026, while Tanaka remains one of Japan’s most sought-after actresses and television personalities, admired for her sophistication and independence.

Though their relationship has ended, many fans still view them as one of Japan’s most graceful and genuine celebrity pairings. As one top comment summarized:
“They may have broken up, but for fans, they’ll always be remembered as a couple who showed maturity, elegance, and mutual respect.”
