The global K-beauty phenomenon has found its latest spotlight in the hit Korean reality show “Just Makeup” a high-stakes makeup survival series that has exploded in popularity since its debut.

Released on October 3, the Coupang Play original program has soared to the No.1 spot on the platform’s trending list, seeing a staggering 665% surge in viewership (a 7.65x increase) within just two weeks.

“Just Makeup” brings together Korea’s top makeup artists to compete through bold creativity, artistry, and technical skill representing the power and innovation of K-beauty on an international scale.

Hosted by Lee Hyo-ri, the show marks her first solo MC role in nearly two years, following her 2023 KBS2 music talk show “The Seasons: Lee Hyo-ri’s Red Carpet.”

While “Red Carpet” closed with modest 1.5% ratings, “Just Makeup” has flipped the narrative entirely silencing early skepticism and proving Lee Hyo-ri’s enduring star power.

“Lee Hyo-ri as a makeup show MC? Perfect casting,” wrote one viewer on social media. Others admitted they were surprised: “After her 0% ratings slump, this is a massive comeback.”

Episode 1 kicked off with a dazzling introduction to the contestants — including celebrity makeup artists for top stars like Han Ye-seul and Kim Tae-hee, and popular beauty YouTubers such as SSIN (1.42 million subscribers) and Calary Girl (Office A).

Judges include Jung Saem-mool, Seo-ok, Risabae, and Lee Jin-soo, forming a powerhouse panel of Korea’s most respected beauty figures.

Each episode features mission-based eliminations, challenging artists to impress judges with unique, emotionally resonant looks. Some contestants earned praise for their creative flair and precision, while others fell behind due to time management or lack of detail heightening the show’s signature survival drama tension.

The upcoming third round promises to be the show’s most intense yet a team mission inspired by K-pop stages. Artists will collaborate to design performance makeup for TWS and STAYC, blending technical artistry with idol performance aesthetics.

The twist? The rule is brutal: the winning team survives, the losing team is eliminated.

The teaser preview already shows emotional breakdowns and tearful moments among contestants, signaling a high-stakes showdown that viewers are eagerly anticipating.

Following the release of Episodes 4 and 5 on October 10, “Just Makeup” hit a 4.6 viewer rating on Coupang Play and quickly became the platform’s most-watched title.

Fans flooded online communities with rave reactions:

  • It feels like the art version of Culinary Class Wars mesmerizing and emotional.
  • Watching their passion and teamwork gives me chills.
  • The creativity is incredible I didn’t realize makeup could be this moving.

Many praised the show’s balance between artistry, competition, and emotional storytelling, calling it “a masterpiece that redefines K-beauty TV.”

With its unique blend of high production value, emotional storytelling, and international appeal, “Just Makeup” is more than just a reality show it’s a showcase of K-Beauty’s global influence and the artistry that drives it.
