From a respected educator to an adult film star the story of Momoka Kawana has shocked Japan and sparked heated debate online about financial pressure and gender expectations in the workplace.
Momoka Kawana, once a physics teacher at a private institution, recently shared her story in an interview with the Japanese magazine Spa! revealing how financial hardship and exhaustion led her to an unexpected career change.
Kawana explained that her monthly salary as a teacher was around 180,000 yen (approximately USD 1,224) despite the immense workload. Her schedule left her with little rest after weekday classes, she was required to manage student clubs, and weekends were often filled with school activities.
“The salary was simply too low for the amount of work I did,” she said, describing the growing frustration that pushed her to consider a new direction.

Her turning point came one day while walking through Ikebukuro, a busy district in Tokyo. She was approached by a scout who suggested she try working as a gravure model a type of glamour photography common in Japan. Kawana agreed, already contemplating leaving the teaching profession.
However, during this new venture, someone suggested she take a step further: “Why not join the adult film industry? It’s less recognizable and pays better.” Tempted by the financial prospects, Kawana decided to debut as an adult video actress in 2015.
Her plan was to continue teaching while filming in secret. She intended to resign before her first film was released publicly. Unfortunately, that plan fell apart when photos from her debut leaked to a men’s magazine with the sensational headline: “The Debut of a Physics Teacher.”
Soon after, Kawana received a call from her superior. The principal had discovered the magazine placed on his desk. To make matters worse, Kawana had once been a student at the same school many faculty members saw her almost like a daughter.

The principal’s reaction was not anger, but concern: “Were you deceived? Are you in financial trouble? We can help you please, just tell me.”
Still, Kawana confessed that she had made the decision herself. The school, bound by professional and ethical standards, had no choice but to terminate her employment.
The consequences extended far beyond her career. Her mother’s reaction was severe—she reportedly told her daughter: “How disappointing. Leave and never come back.”
Since then, Kawana has lost contact with her family, including her father and sister. “My sister was heartbroken when she found out,” she said quietly during the interview.

Now retired from the adult film industry, Momoka Kawana revealed that recent legal reforms in Japan which tightened regulations around adult content production had made it difficult to continue working.
She also disclosed a more painful truth: she is currently battling cancer, but remains calm and reflective about her choices. “I have no regrets,” she stated. “But I wish I could have at least said goodbye to my colleagues and students properly.”
Momoka Kawana’s story highlights ongoing issues within Japan’s education system particularly the low wages and extreme workloads faced by teachers. It also reflects the social stigma and personal cost borne by individuals who step outside conventional roles in Japanese society.
Her case remains a stark reminder of the blurred line between personal freedom and societal expectations in modern Japan.
