Actor Lee Chae-min recently discussed the challenges and responsibilities of stepping into the hit tvN drama Bon Appétit, Your Majesty as a last-minute replacement for Park Sung-hoon.

In an interview on October 1 at a Seoul café, Lee Chae-min reflected on his intense preparation, saying, “I felt a heavy responsibility and pressure, but that same pressure sparked an unexpected passion. I cut down on sleep to study the script and practice horseback riding and calligraphy.”

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty follows a top chef who time-slips to the past, encountering an absolute gourmet king, leading to a comedic survival-fantasy storyline. The series concluded with a record-high 17.1% rating (Nielsen Korea). Lee Chae-min portrayed Prince Lee Heon, whose vibrant performance became a highlight, overshadowing his sudden casting.

“I gave my all to this project. It was both demanding and rewarding. During filming, I was also working on Crushology 101, so I had overlapping schedules. I only managed short naps during car rides, but I tried to deliver the best results in a limited time,” Lee Chae-min shared.

Despite this being his first historical drama, he managed to adapt, crediting Director Jang Tae-yoo and senior actors for guidance. Lee Chae-min studied various historical dramas and culinary videos to perfect his portrayal of the gourmet prince, whose reactions and taste expressions were central to the show’s comedic essence. Many scenes required imagining CG effects while maintaining natural performances—a challenge Lee handled skillfully.

Collaboration with senior actors, particularly Kim Hyung-mook, was crucial. Lee Chae-min stated, “During the contest scenes, I relied heavily on ideas from senior actors. I didn’t want to lose, so their support was invaluable.”

Lee Chae-min also expressed his love for food, revealing that tonkatsu is his favorite dish, while he enjoyed on-set creations like beef bourguignon and marinated ribs. His on-screen romance with YoonA, who played chef Yeon Ji-young, received praise for chemistry, despite their 10-year age gap.

Looking ahead, Lee Chae-min is careful about selecting future projects. “The success of this show increases expectations, which brings both pressure and motivation. I want to grow while staying true to myself,” he said.

Bon Appétit, Your Majesty marked a turning point for Lee Chae-min, cementing his rising status in the industry and opening doors for over 30 upcoming projects.
