On the September 21 broadcast of SBS’s variety show My Little Old Boy, Lee Jun Young appeared as a special MC.

Having played Yeong Beom, IU’s first love, in the hit drama When Life Gives You Tangerines, Lee was warmly welcomed by the panelists, who praised his performance.

Lee then revealed an unexpected real-life episode connected to a particular scene in the drama—the “scorched rice scene.” In the story, his girlfriend pours him a bowl of scorched rice during a family meeting, but his character simply sits still without helping. Viewers felt frustrated, and one citizen later approached Lee in person, telling him sternly, “You should apologize to IU.” He admitted that the encounter left him stunned.

Even his father had a memorable reaction. After watching the scene, his father jokingly said, “Next time, I’ll scoop the scorched rice for you, but make sure you introduce me to a good daughter-in-law.”

Known for his versatility, Lee Jun Young first gained attention playing villains with chilling intensity. His nickname “Handsome Trash” came from his notorious role as a ruthless bully in Weak Hero. He also impressed with his performance as a psychopathic deserter in D.P. On My Little Old Boy, Seo Jang Hoon praised his ability to completely transform, saying he could barely recognize him between roles. Lee even revealed his acting trick for playing villains: “If more of the whites of your eyes show, you look scarier.”

Meanwhile, When Life Gives You Tangerines has been a massive success, topping Netflix’s Korean chart and ranking in the Global TOP 10 for non-English series. It later climbed to No.1 globally in its category, staying in the TOP 10 for eight consecutive weeks, with over 35 million views in the first half of the year. The drama also swept awards, winning four trophies at the 61st Baeksang Arts Awards, three at the 4th Blue Dragon Series Awards, and three at the Global OTT Awards, proving both its popularity and artistic merit.
