A chilling mystery will be spotlighted on SBS’s investigative program Unanswered Questions on September 20. The episode follows a string of bizarre resignations among flight attendants, all connected to shamanic initiation rituals conducted at the same shrine.
The case first surfaced in July, when veteran flight attendant “Jung Hye-won” (alias), after 14 years of service at a major airline, announced her resignation through an email sent to more than 2,000 colleagues. In her farewell, she revealed that she had undergone a shaman initiation and was starting a new life as a spiritual practitioner. The email even included a business card bearing the name of her shrine and spiritual title.

Her colleagues, while shocked, wished her well. But suspicions grew when it emerged that another flight attendant, “Lee Soo-jung” (alias), who joined the airline the same year, had also quit after receiving a similar initiation. The two women had both been linked to the same shrine.
The mystery deepened when it was revealed that Lee Soo-jung’s younger sister had also undergone shaman initiation at the same location a year earlier. All three were connected to a spiritual leader known by the pseudonym Chaedo Ryeong, who runs a shrine in Dongducheon called Janghosa (alias).
Family members interviewed by SBS expressed shock and despair. Jung Hye-won’s mother said she had received a legal notice instructing her not to contact her daughter, while Lee Soo-jung’s father admitted he had no idea his two daughters had become shamans. Both families alleged that Chaedo Ryeong encouraged his followers to sever ties with relatives.
Adding to their suspicions, family members claimed that money — including parental support and personal savings — had disappeared after the women became disciples.
According to the investigation, Chaedo Ryeong initiated nearly 10 followers in just three to four years, most of them women in their 30s, including flight attendants and corporate employees.
The program will delve into whether this is mere coincidence or a calculated pattern, asking: Who is Chaedo Ryeong, and why are so many young women being drawn into his shrine?
Unanswered Questions aims to shed light on the growing concerns of families who say they simply want their daughters to “come back home.”
