On September 19, Youn Yuh Jung joins director Andrew Ahn and actor Han Gi Chan at the Busan Cinema Center for the promotion of their film The Wedding Banquet, a modern remake of the 1993 classic. The new version features a stellar cast including Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone, Kelly Marie Tran, and Joan Chen.
Known globally for her performances in Minari and Pachinko, Youn once again portrays a grandmother, this time one who embraces her LGBTQ+ grandchild in a heartfelt, comedic story. The role resonates even more deeply given Youn’s personal life. In past interviews, she revealed that her eldest son came out as gay in 2000 and later held a same-sex wedding in New York, where it is legally recognized.
Reflecting on her experience, Youn shared that her real-life words inspired her on-screen line, “You are my grandson.” She also admitted that, despite concerns over conservative attitudes in Korea, she fully supports her son and son-in-law, saying, “Now, I love my son-in-law even more than my son.”
