On September 17, Sunye shared on her social media that she was moved after watching a video of Kirk’s wife mourning his tragic death in a shooting. As a mother herself, she said she empathized deeply and posted a short message of condolence. However, the tribute quickly sparked controversy, with critics pointing to Kirk’s far-right political stances.
In response, Sunye defended her post, writing:
I shared the video because I felt heartbroken as a person and a mother. Why do some bring up politics, extremism, and even Wonder Girls when all I did was mourn a tragic death? Should we really laugh at the loss of a human life?
I paid tribute as a human being to another human being. I want to leave behind a better world for the next generation. We may have different opinions, but through those differences we can create a better path.
If you come to my space with disrespectful and offensive words, I will respond by deleting and blocking. Please understand this.
Do not drag me into political or religious issues because of this. My tribute was solely about a tragic loss of life.
Earlier, on September 16, Sunye shared a photo on her social media mourning the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot during a debate at Utah Valley University on September 10. Alongside the post, she included a Bible passage from 1 John 4:9-10 , expressing her faith and message of divine love:
“9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (1 John 4:9-10)”

However, the post quickly drew attention due to Kirk’s controversial legacy. As a prominent conservative figure in the U.S., Kirk was known for his outspoken support of Donald Trump and his association with far-right politics. Turning Point USA has often been criticized for promoting divisive rhetoric, and Kirk himself has been accused of spreading misinformation on various political and social issues.

The tribute was met with mixed reactions , especially among Korean netizens unfamiliar with Kirk’s broader reputation. Some questioned whether Sunye was aware of his political stance, while others expressed disappointment:
“Why would she post something like that? Does she even know who he is?”
“She should’ve done more research before posting.”
After the backlash intensified, Sunye deleted the post without issuing a public statement, further fueling speculation and debate online. Many interpreted the silent deletion as an acknowledgment of the controversy.
While some fans defended her right to express condolences as a Christian, others argued that public figures must be more cautious when sharing tributes, especially involving politically charged individuals.

This incident has sparked a larger conversation about the intersection of faith, global politics, and celebrity influence—particularly as Korean entertainers increasingly engage with international topics.
Sunye has not yet commented further.
