On the September 11 episode of SBS’s Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail, the show delved into the notorious violence of “Demolition Thugs” during Seoul’s 1990s redevelopment projects. Actress and Baby V.O.X member Yoon Eun Hye appeared as a guest listener, where she shocked viewers by opening up about her own traumatic experience.

The episode titled “My Disappeared Home, and the Demolition Thugs” revisited the brutal and inhumane tactics used by hired enforcers who, under the silent watch of authorities, engaged in beatings, property destruction, sexual violence, and assaults on women, children, and even pregnant women. Journalists who had previously covered war zones described the demolition sites as being “no different from battlefields.”

Listening to these harrowing accounts, Yoon Eun Hye expressed deep empathy for the victims and shared her personal story: “Though it cannot compare to the pain of the demolition victims, I too carry trauma. During my days as a singer, I was once hit with a water gun filled with acid and nearly lost my eyesight. I was also pelted with raw eggs, which left lasting trauma.” Her confession left fellow panelists shocked, with actor Jang Hyun Sung responding in disbelief: “Really? That’s heartbreaking.”

Yoon Eun Hye added: “Trauma never fades easily. The demolition victims endured even worse—unimaginable violence, verbal abuse, and sexual assault. Their suffering is beyond words.” Her tearful remarks highlighted the depth of pain carried by survivors decades later.

Other guests also voiced outrage while watching the footage. Yoon Eun Hye exclaimed, “This level of cruelty deserves prison. They all should have been locked up.” Singer KCM furiously added, “They’re not even human. They’re monsters.” Actress Chae Seo Jin was equally shaken, describing the violence as “a living hell.”

The program raised questions about why authorities tolerated such brutality and what truly lay behind the violent acts committed under the guise of redevelopment.

Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail airs every Thursday at 10:20 PM on SBS, where three narrators share real historical stories with their partners in a casual, personal setting.
