On September 9, TVING’s Dear X released a statement to Xports News: “We belatedly recognized the similarity between Dear X’s launch poster and a certain reference. We have immediately stopped its use and decided not to use it again in the future.”

The production team added: “We sincerely apologize for causing discomfort due to our failure to thoroughly review the production process. We will strengthen our inspection procedures to prevent such incidents from happening again.”

The controversy began after the drama unveiled its poster on September 8, which featured the English title “Dear X” written in red on white paper, with only a pair of eyes visible. However, online communities quickly pointed out that it bore a strong resemblance to the poster of the 2018 Chinese film The Devotion of Suspect X. Since Dear X is not a remake but an entirely separate production, the plagiarism suspicions drew even more criticism.

Acknowledging the issue, the Dear X team apologized and promised stricter oversight in future promotions.

Meanwhile, Dear X follows Baek Ah-jin (played by Kim Yoo-jung), a top Korean actress who hides her ruthless true nature behind a beautiful face while wearing a metaphorical mask to climb from hell to the very top. It tells the story of her downfall and the desperate love of Yoon Jun-seo (played by Kim Young-dae), who chooses hell to protect her. The drama is set to premiere on November 6.
