Renowned for her breathtaking beauty, Li Chi (Nina Li Chi) became a household name in Hong Kong’s entertainment industry during the 1980s and 1990s. Her elegance and allure captivated not only audiences but also some of the most powerful figures in showbiz and business. Yet, her extraordinary looks also brought turbulence, scandal, and sacrifices that shaped her dramatic life story.
Li Chi rose to fame after winning the 1986 Miss Asia Pacific Hong Kong, where one of the judge famously declared her “a beauty seen only once in 50 years.” With her perfect blend of Eastern and Western features—large expressive eyes, high nose bridge, full lips, and a soft oval face—Li Chi embodied both classic grace and sensual charm. Her striking figure, poised demeanor, and confident aura allowed her to shine on screen, even in minor roles.

However, despite her dazzling appearance, her acting career failed to flourish. Film directors often cast her as decorative “flower vase” characters rather than offering roles that showcased depth or skill. As a result, the public remembered her more for her beauty than for cinematic achievements.
Her radiance attracted many powerful admirers, including casino tycoon Stanley Ho, who pursued her with extravagant gifts and even expressed a desire to marry her. Opposition from his wives, who allegedly sabotaged Li Chi’s career opportunities, eventually ended the relationship, leaving her heartbroken and professionally sidelined.

In 1989, Li Chi met martial arts superstar Jet Li while filming Dragon Fight. Despite being married with two children, Jet Li fell deeply in love with her and openly admitted, “I love Nina Li. I would sacrifice everything for her—even my life.” His decision to divorce his first wife and pursue Li Chi provoked harsh criticism, with many accusing him of abandoning his long-time partner for a beauty queen.
By the early 1990s, Li Chi stepped away from acting to pursue business ventures. Unfortunately, financial turmoil left her facing massive debts totaling 70 million HKD (approximately $9.2 million USD). During this period, Jet Li stood firmly by her side, signing a six-film deal with producer Charles Heung and using his entire earnings to repay her debts. The move fueled public debate—some praised his loyalty, while others mocked him for being “blinded by beauty.”

After a decade together, Jet Li and Li Chi married in the United States. Since then, she has retreated from the spotlight to focus on family life. To this day, Jet Li remains devoted, entrusting her with full control of his vast fortune, estimated at over 2 billion HKD (around $677 million USD). Unlike many celebrities, Jet Li has never faced infidelity rumors, consistently showing respect and affection toward his wife, even as she aged beyond her youthful allure.
Despite this enduring bond, public opinion remains divided. For many, their love story is forever shadowed by its controversial beginnings—an affair that broke a marriage and a man who sacrificed his family for the woman once hailed as “a beauty seen only once in 50 years.”
