On the web variety show New Women, released on August 26, Jo Hye-ryun and Lee Kyung-sil spoke about how some actors tend to look down on entertainers from the variety scene.

Lee Kyung-sil remarked, “I have one regret about actors. Many big-name actors actually started out in variety shows. If they did well there, they would get cast in dramas and become famous talents. But later, when I call them on a variety show, they act as if they never had anything to do with it.”

Host Lee Sun-min added, “Actors definitely have that side. There was even an incident at an awards ceremony. Remember when Yoo Jae-suk received the Grand Prize at the Baeksang Arts Awards, and some actors barely clapped for him? Meanwhile, when director Lee Joon-ik was announced as the winner in the film category, most of the actors gave him a standing ovation. That difference caused a lot of controversy.”

Yoo Jae-suk won the Grand Prize – Television at the 2021 Baeksang Arts Awards, but a number of actors were criticized for failing to applaud him. By contrast, the hall erupted with applause and a standing ovation when filmmaker Lee Joon-ik was called for his Grand Prize, highlighting a clear disparity in treatment.

Jo Hye-ryun admitted, “Yes, that really did feel upsetting.” Lee Kyung-sil, who hadn’t known about the incident before, responded with disbelief: “Did everyone suddenly lose feeling in their hands?”

Lee Kyung-sil clarified that not all actors treated variety entertainers poorly, recalling a warm encounter with actor Song Seung-heon. She said, “Song Seung-heon became famous through Three Guys and Three Girls. Later, when I met him, he was already a big star, but he came to me and hugged me, calling me ‘sister.’ I was so grateful. I once asked him to help with a quiz call on World Changing Quiz, and he immediately said, ‘Of course, sister.’ He really was such a gentleman. I’m still thankful to him to this day.”
