In a new interview on the YouTube channel Jjanhyung Shin Dong-yup, uploaded on August 25, actress Jo Yeo-jung appeared alongside actor Jung Sung-il to promote their new film, Murderer Report. But beyond the film, the conversation took a deeply personal turn.
“My 20s were really difficult,” Jo confessed. “Because I was struggling, I didn’t want to drink. I usually fight with myself—not others. Drinking because I was having a hard time felt like losing to myself.”

Jo went on to explain that she initially believed she couldn’t drink simply because no one in her family did. But with time, she realized it had more to do with inner resolve than family habits.
Her longtime friend and host Shin Dong-yup added, “I’ve known Yeo-jung for a long time. I remember there were periods when she wasn’t working at all.” Jo admitted that she didn’t have her first drink until her mid-30s, when life and work had stabilized:
“I was doing better as an actress, and I thought, ‘Maybe I can try a drink.’ I had a glass of whiskey, and it tasted so good. It felt like I could breathe a little easier.”
Her honest remarks resonated with fans and netizens alike, many of whom praised her for her discipline, self-awareness, and perseverance in the face of adversity. For many young artists struggling silently, her story struck a chord—proving once again why Jo Yeo-jeong is not just admired for her talent but for her character as well.
