Nearly two decades ago, Nam Gyuri was one of K-pop’s brightest rising stars. Known as the beautiful and talented main vocalist of the powerhouse vocal group SeeYa, she seemed destined for a long-lasting career at the top. But in 2006, one shocking stage incident changed everything.
The Infamous Incident That Sparked Outrage
During a live broadcast performance in 2006, one of SeeYa’s backup dancers suddenly collapsed on stage, suffering a seizure. Standing just a step away, Nam Gyuri continued singing and dancing, seemingly unfazed by the emergency. For nearly 20 seconds, the dancer writhed on the floor before staff rushed in to carry her away.
The performance was televised nationwide, and backlash was swift. Nam Gyuri was labeled “cold-hearted,” “insensitive,” and “inhuman” by furious netizens, who accused her of valuing the performance over her colleague’s safety.

Her agency attempted to explain, claiming she was overwhelmed, panicked, and pressured by the strict demands of live broadcasting, which required idols to keep performing no matter what. Still, the public wasn’t convinced. Nam Gyuri’s once-bright career took a nosedive, her image shattered.
Nam Gyuri Speaks Out After 19 Years
Now, nearly 20 years later, Nam Gyuri has finally addressed the scandal in a video on 1theK Originals titled “Why SeeYa Couldn’t Reunite?” She firmly denied that she had ignored the dancer: “I didn’t see what was happening. The flashing lights were so strong I couldn’t even see the red camera cue. I only had a couple of days to learn the choreography and was focused on not making mistakes. Then suddenly, the accident happened.”
Nam Gyuri revealed that her agency at the time spoke on her behalf without asking her side of the story, making it appear as if she had acknowledged behaving “inappropriately.” She added: “If I had seen it, I would have signaled for help. I’m not the kind of person to just stand there.”
The singer-turned-actress admitted the controversy left deep scars: “I suffered psychological trauma. People cursed at me in convenience stores and in the streets. Online comments I could ignore, but being insulted face-to-face at such a young age was heartbreaking.”
Nam Gyuri, born in 1985 as Nam Mijung, debuted with SeeYa in 2006. The group quickly rose to fame with emotional ballads, cementing their place in second-generation K-pop. With her doll-like visuals and soulful voice, Nam Gyuri became the face of the group.
In 2009, however, she shocked fans by leaving SeeYa due to conflicts with her management company, sparking a legal battle. Transitioning into acting, she found success with the 2011 drama 49 Days. Still, her career never quite regained the same momentum as during her early idol days.
After her recent clarification, many netizens expressed sympathy, blaming her former management for mishandling the situation and ruining her career. Fans now see Nam Gyuri not as “cold-hearted,” but as a young idol caught in an unfair scandal.
