tvN’s new weekend drama Bon Appetit, Your Majesty (directed by Jang Tae-yu, written by fGRD) faced backlash from viewers right from its premiere due to an incorrect Chinese character in the historical setting.
According to industry reports, episodes 1 and 2 feature Yeon Ji-young (Im Yoon-ah) returning from France and accidentally landing in the heart of Joseon. The controversy arose in episode 1, during her first encounter with King Lee-heon (Lee Chae-min), when a flag displayed the four-character idiom meant to symbolize “a wise king governs, creating a peaceful era” incorrectly.
Instead of 태평성대 (太平聖代), the flag read 太平聖大 — using 大, meaning “big” instead of 代, meaning “era”. Fans criticized the production for failing to even check basic Chinese character accuracy, with comments flooding online communities and social media:
- How can they get Chinese characters wrong in a historical drama?
- Did the production team not even proofread?
- I put it into a translator and it shows ‘Taepyeongseong University’…
- Seeing ‘太平聖大’ instead of ‘太平聖代’ ruined the immersion.
As of August 25, the scene remains unchanged with the wrong character still displayed.
Despite the mistake, Bon Appetit, Your Majesty has been gaining viewers with its unique premise. The story follows Paris Michelin 3-star head chef Yeon Ji-young, who unexpectedly time-travels to the Joseon era and meets the tyrannical yet discerning King Lee-heon. The drama is based on the web novel “Surviving as the Chef of Yeonsan-gun” and blends historical fantasy, survival, and romantic comedy.
Ratings show a rising trend, with Nielsen Korea reporting a nationwide paid household viewership of 6.6% for episode 2, up from 4.9% for episode 1.
