During a press conference held on August 22 at CGV Yongsan I’Park Mall in Seoul, Director Maggie Kang, the creative force behind K-Pop Demon Hunters, reflected on the intense process behind the creation of the powerful track that has captivated fans worldwide.
Released on June 20, K-Pop Demon Hunters follows K-pop idols Rumi, Mira, and Zoey, who lead double lives as demon slayers protecting their fans from evil spirits. The film not only topped Netflix’s global movie charts upon release but also became the most-watched animated film in Netflix history and the second most-watched Netflix movie of all time.

Its standout track, “Golden,” mirrored that success, quickly rising to No. 1 on the Billboard chart, further proving the film’s massive cultural resonance. “Out of all the songs, ‘Golden’ was by far the hardest to write and produce,” Kang admitted. She explained that the song needed to do more than just sound good — it had to embody the emotional journeys of the film’s lead characters.
“It had to represent each character’s journey — their origins, their secrets, their growth,” she said. “Only then could the audience truly feel the depth of their stories through this song.”
Kang also highlighted that the track was intentionally made difficult to perform: “The song needed to be challenging to sing. I believed that the higher the notes, the stronger the emotions would come through.”
She revealed that the production team went through seven to eight rounds of revisions before arriving at the final version. “I cried at that moment,” Kang said, recalling the first time she heard the completed track. “I just thought, ‘This is it.’”
With “Golden” now a fan-favorite anthem and the film cementing its place in pop culture, Kang’s emotional honesty has only deepened fans’ appreciation for the work behind the scenes — and the heart that went into every note.
