Recently, the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Agreement Division 29 (Presiding Judge Eom Gi-pyo) sentenced lawyer B to two years and six months in prison for violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (coercion using illegal footage).

An accomplice, identified as C, was also sentenced to two years in prison. Both defendants were additionally ordered to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.

A, who made his debut by winning a music competition, has composed numerous hit songs and provided tracks for various singers and actors. However, in 2021, he was convicted of illegally filming sexual acts with a woman and received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

The current case began in 2020, when A entrusted a hard drive containing illegal recordings to C for disposal. Instead, C secretly kept some of the material and handed it over to lawyer B. From March to April of last year, B and C repeatedly threatened A—15 times in total—saying they would submit the videos to police or leak them to the press and YouTubers unless he paid them.

The court stated, “The defendants’ actions amounted to attempting to force the victim to comply with unlawful demands using sexual footage. Such acts of intimidation cannot be justified under any circumstances.”

While the court acknowledged the lack of prior criminal records, it emphasized, “Even if the victim himself was responsible for creating illegal recordings, exploiting them for blackmail constitutes a serious crime that society cannot tolerate.”
