Global streaming giant Disney+ is set to bring a fresh wave of change to the Korean drama market. Next month, the platform will exclusively premiere its first-ever original Korean historical drama series, The Murky Stream, signaling a bold expansion into the genre. Even before its release, the series has generated tremendous anticipation, with netizens calling the casting lineup “insane.”
The Murky Stream unites director Choo Chang-min, best known for the box office hit Masquerade which drew over 12.3 million viewers, and writer Cheon Seong-il, who delivered the legendary fusion sageuk Chuno with a record 34% peak viewership. This collaboration alone is enough to draw attention, but the project stands out even more as Disney+’s first attempt at producing an original historical K-drama. At a time when competition over local content is intensifying in the OTT market, the global platform’s move into the sageuk genre carries symbolic weight.
The drama is set in Joseon during a time when the once-peaceful Gyeonggang descends into chaos. At the center are three characters whose fates intertwine: Si-yul (Rowoon), a man hiding his past who has become a rogue; Choi Eun (Shin Ye-eun), a sharp-minded and righteous merchant leader; and Jeong Cheon (Park Seo-ham), an upright government officer. Their clashing beliefs, desires, and destinies pull them into a whirlwind of conflict against the backdrop of a turbulent era.
The casting lineup has already become a major talking point. Rowoon, who has showcased his wide acting spectrum in both modern and historical dramas such as The Matchmakers, Destined With You, and The King’s Affection, takes on the role of Si-yul, portraying the resilience and charisma of a man hardened by life. Shin Ye-eun, who impressed in The Glory, The Secret Romantic Guesthouse, and Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born, transforms into the strong-willed merchant Choi Eun, revealing a determined and strategic side previously unseen in her career.
They are joined by Park Ji-hwan, who brought gravitas in the The Outlaws series, versatile actor Choi Won-young, and Park Seo-ham of Semantic Error fame. Choi Won-young will play a powerful general who seeks to change Joseon, serving as a key figure in the unfolding story.
The production team adds further credibility to the project. Director Choo Chang-min earned acclaim for blending delicate storytelling with grand historical scale in Masquerade. Writer Cheon Seong-il, celebrated for his unique storytelling in Chuno, is returning to historical drama for the first time in 14 years, raising high expectations.
Pre-release reactions have been explosive. After the trailer dropped, fans flooded social media with comments such as, “Rowoon in a sageuk? I’m sold,” “The trailer alone is overwhelming,” and “The action scenes look cinematic.” Some even began counting down to the release date, saying they couldn’t wait any longer.

Adding to the anticipation, The Murky Stream has been officially invited to the “On Screen” section of the 30th Busan International Film Festival, where it will hold its world premiere on September 17. The festival debut is expected to build strong word-of-mouth ahead of its global streaming release.
For Disney+, The Murky Stream represents more than just a marketing slogan. It signals a commitment to investing in traditional Korean content and expanding the global reach of K-dramas. Just as Netflix redefined the genre with Kingdom, Disney+ is positioning The Murky Stream as a new standard for action-driven sageuk storytelling.

With a stellar cast, a proven creative team, and the novelty of being Disney+’s first historical K-drama, The Murky Stream is already primed for success. As the premiere draws near, all eyes are on whether the drama will captivate not only Korean audiences but also global viewers. The Murky Stream is set for worldwide release on Disney+ in September 2025.
