MBC’s Friday-Saturday drama Mary Kills People is gaining momentum and positive word-of-mouth, raising hopes for a ratings rebound. Written by Lee Soo-ah and directed by Park Joon-woo, the suspense series follows a doctor who helps terminally ill patients end their lives and a detective determined to catch her.
The drama has sparked deep audience reactions with comments such as “It makes me reflect on my own life”, “Lee Bo-young, Lee Min-ki and Kang Ki-young are redefining their careers” and “It grows more thought-provoking with each episode.” Its daring subject matter of assisted dying, combined with solid storytelling and stylish direction, has fueled growing anticipation.

Lee Bo-young delivers a captivating portrayal of Woo So-jung, a doctor torn between saving lives and aiding those who choose death, balancing charisma with humanity. Lee Min-ki shocks viewers as detective Ban Ji-hoon, who goes undercover as a terminal patient to catch her. Kang Ki-young brings warmth and levity to the heavy narrative, shifting the tone with his presence.
Director Park Joon-woo heightens the show’s impact through striking visual storytelling — from Woo So-jung’s haunting underwater trauma scene to Ban Ji-hoon’s tense moments pushing a suspect toward death. Action sequences like a hospital fire and a desperate car-blocking scene add gripping momentum, while carefully applied visual effects enhance the actors’ performances.

The series also resonates through deeply human, realistic episodes about those who choose death: a woman who spends her final day at her favorite beach, a national soccer hero hiding his suffering from loved ones, and a young man making a heartfelt confession before passing in his father’s arms. These emotional arcs forge a strong bond with viewers, adding authenticity and empathy to the drama’s core message.
Producers teased that from Episode 5, a major twist and even more meaningful stories will unfold, aiming to create moments for viewers to laugh, cry and reflect together. Mary Kills People will skip its August 15 broadcast, with Episode 5 airing August 16 at 10 PM.
