KBS’s new weekend drama Glorious Days’s premiere week recorded audience ratings in the 13% range — a sharp drop compared to its predecessor For Eagle Brothers, which ended with a stable 20% share. Even though the rating was not too low, the result falls far short of the production team’s ambitious 30% goal, barely reaching half that figure.
Expectations had been high from the start. Written by So Hyun-kyung, the mind behind KBS weekend hits like My Daughter Seo-young and My Golden Life, and starring Jung Il-woo and Jung In-sun, the series seemed poised for success. But early reactions have been less than favorable.
Jung Il-woo’s performance has faced repeated criticism for awkward delivery in certain scenes, while some viewers found the drama’s situations overly contrived and hard to relate to. The portrayal of a remarried family by Lee Tae-ran and Yoon Hyun-min also drew debate. In one dinner scene, Lee Tae-ran’s character, Go Sung-hee, interacts with her stepson, Han Tae-joo (Yoon Hyun-min) in a way that many felt was stiff and scripted, with some likening it more to a stage play than a TV drama.
Despite the rocky start, hope remains for a turnaround. Many viewers are banking on the writer’s proven track record to deliver stronger developments in later episodes. Weekend dramas have historically rebounded from slow beginnings — For Eagle Brothers started in the 10% range before peaking at 21%.
Still, the initial slump is a considerable burden for the cast and crew. In KBS’s competitive weekend slot, quick improvements in story pacing, dialogue, and emotional delivery will be crucial if Glorious Days hopes to recover its momentum and achieve the success its creators envisioned.
