On August 9 (KST), LAFC announced via its official website that Son is part of the squad for the 2025 MLS Round 27 clash against Chicago Fire, scheduled for August 10 at 9:30 AM (KST) at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
LAFC currently sits sixth in the Western Conference with 36 points (1.71 points per game), having played two fewer matches than fourth-place Seattle Sounders (38 points). A win in this fixture could propel them into the top four, securing a valuable home advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Chicago, meanwhile, is ninth in the Eastern Conference with 35 points and is unbeaten in their last three matches (2 wins, 1 draw).

Son’s inclusion comes just three days after his official signing was announced on August 7. The contract runs until 2027, with extension options through the summers of 2028 and 2029, under a Designated Player deal. The $26.5 million (₩36.7 billion) transfer fee surpasses the previous MLS record of $22 million paid by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath in January 2025.
MLS called Son’s transfer “a landmark signing in league history” , while LAFC welcomed “a global superstar who scored 173 goals in 454 matches over a decade with Tottenham Hotspur”. During his Spurs career, Son won the Premier League Golden Boot, was named Player of the Month four times, lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy, and ended the club’s 17-year trophy drought last season.

While awaiting P-1 visa approval, Son has already joined team training, reuniting with former Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris. He has been adapting to both forward and wing roles during tactical sessions, and with Jeremy Ebobisse sidelined by injury, he could start up front in his debut.
LAFC is in strong form with 7 wins, 6 draws and just 2 losses in their last 15 league matches, with Denis Bouanga currently tied for sixth in the MLS scoring charts with 13 goals. All eyes will be on whether Son Heung-min can make an immediate impact as MLS’s most high-profile signing.
