In a disturbing case that shocked the public, police have identified the person behind the recent bomb threat at the Shinsaegae Department Store in Myeong-dong, Seoul—a middle school student from Jeju Island.
On August 5, a threatening post was uploaded to the DC Inside “Photoshop Gallery” with the title “Shinsaegae Department Store Bomb Guide.” The post warned people to stay away from the Seoul flagship store, claiming a real explosive had been planted on the first floor and would detonate at 3 PM. The message triggered immediate alarm and was swiftly reported to authorities.
Seoul police evacuated more than 4,000 people from the department store, including staff and customers, and shut down surrounding access for safety. A thorough sweep by the bomb squad found no explosive device.
By 7 PM the same day, authorities had tracked the IP address and apprehended the poster, a first-year middle school student (13 years old), at his home in Jeju City. He is classified as a “juvenile under the age of criminal responsibility”, meaning he will not face prosecution but may be subject to protective measures.

In police questioning, the student stated, “I was curious how people would react if I made a bomb threat.” Authorities also confirmed that the boy has been diagnosed with severe autism since birth.
While no physical harm occurred, the emotional toll and disruption were significant. The incident has reignited public discussion around juvenile law, internet safety, and the need for mental health awareness in youth.
Police continue to assess the situation and determine appropriate follow-up under the juvenile protection system.
