The death of actor Song Young-kyu has cast a sorrowful light on the hidden battles he fought — both as a public figure and a father.
On August 4, Song Young-kyu was found deceased in his car in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. At just 55, the actor’s life ended in tragedy, and stories of his recent struggles paint a heartbreaking picture of a man who gave everything for his family.
Among the most striking revelations: Song Young-kyu gave up his apartment and moved into a semi-basement home to afford his daughters’ education. In a past episode of “The House Detox”, he explained: “We moved here after 11 years in a spacious apartment to support our kids. My eldest is studying in the U.S., and my youngest is pursuing musical theatre.”

His wife echoed his sentiments at the time: “Rather than a fancy home, we chose to prioritize our daughter’s dreams. It wasn’t easy, but I’m grateful for it.”
Despite his sacrifices, things unraveled. His wife’s café business suffered losses amid an economic downturn, and Song Young-kyu — once steadily working in dramas and films — saw opportunities dwindle. To protect his family, he began living alone in an officetel. Stress mounted.
A close acquaintance revealed to OSEN: “He already had a lot of stress, and the DUI incident pushed him over the edge. He was deeply affected by the public backlash.”
What hurts most for fans and those who knew him was the duality: an actor loved for his craft, and a man quietly crumbling behind the scenes.
Song Young-kyu debuted in 1994 in a children’s musical and went on to appear in Extreme Job, V.I.P., Happiness for Sale, and many dramas as a trusted supporting actor. He also served as an adjunct professor of performing arts at Semyung University.
Most recently, he portrayed Pastor Yoon Se-hoon in ENA’s The Defects and rugby coach Kim Min-jung in SBS’s The Winning Try. These roles would be his final ones.
As the nation mourns, his life leaves behind a powerful legacy — not just of performance, but of a parent’s quiet resilience in the face of overwhelming hardship.
Rest in peace, Song Young-kyu. You were more than a character onscreen — you were a father, a fighter, and a man who gave it all.
