JTBC is making headlines once again with its new weekend drama “Beyond the Bar”, set to premiere on August 2 at 10:40 PM KST. Following the critically acclaimed drama “Good Boy”, which concluded with an impressive nationwide rating of 8.1%, “Beyond the Bar” is already generating considerable attention among viewers and online communities—even before its broadcast.
“Beyond the Bar” centers on Kang Hyo-min (played by Jung Chae-yeon), a principled yet socially awkward rookie lawyer at the elite law firm Yeollim. She begins her career under the mentorship of Yoon Seok-hoon (played by Lee Jin-wook), a brilliant but cold senior partner. The drama follows their journey through personal growth, legal battles and unexpected human connections—forming a uniquely heartwarming courtroom drama.

Boasting a star-studded cast and a production team known for delivering hits like “Love Scout”, “Revenant” and “Through the Darkness”, the show’s credibility is further bolstered by director Kim Jae-hong and writer Park Mi-hyun, a practicing attorney who brings authenticity and precision to each legal case.
While comparisons to tvN’s “Law and the City”, another popular legal series, have surfaced, director Kim is confident that “Beyond the Bar” brings something fundamentally different to the table. “I’ve worked on other courtroom dramas, but this one felt genuinely special,” he said. “The legal cases are realistic and emotionally charged, each episode exploring a different story of love through a legal lens. The unique warmth lawyers show in helping the wounded sets this drama apart.”

Park Mi-hyun echoed that sentiment, sharing that her goal was to “explore the concept of love within the most rational setting—the courtroom. The emotional highs and lows that intersect with cold logic create a compelling human experience.”
The drama also marks the first collaboration between veteran actor Lee Jin-wook and rising star Jung Chae-yeon. Their synergy has already impressed fans through teasers. Lee praised Jung for her natural performance, saying, “She showed up on set as Hyo-min from day one. I’m proud to work with her.” Jung responded warmly, noting how she felt encouraged and grew personally during the project.

Writer Park was equally effusive in her praise, saying, “Their portrayal is so perfect that even 100 points wouldn’t be enough. Watching them breathe life into these characters made me feel, ‘Ah, this is what drama is.’”
Though “Beyond the Bar” revolves around courtroom battles, it also delves into personal development and the emotional struggles of its characters. Director Kim reflected, “Working on this drama made me rethink my own values. I hope viewers also find themselves reflecting on their lives.”

Lee Jin-wook added, “Watching Seok-hoon evolve through these cases helped me gain a more empathetic perspective. Even my friends noticed the change in me.”
Coming on the heels of “Good Boy”, which combined emotional depth with a hard-hitting action narrative about former national athletes turned police officers, expectations for “Beyond the Bar” are understandably high. Director Kim admitted the pressure but emphasized that he’s focusing on quality: “We’re working hard to make ‘Beyond the Bar’ earn its place as a meaningful, well-received drama.”

Even before airing, anticipation is soaring. Netizens have flooded teaser videos with excited comments like, “I’m so ready for this,” “This looks like a total must-watch,” “Lee Jin-wook and courtroom dramas? Count me in!” and “JTBC is really working hard lately!”
With a compelling premise, a solid creative team, and early fan excitement, “Beyond the Bar” may very well continue JTBC’s winning streak in K-dramas.
