JTBC’s upcoming legal drama Beyond the Bar brings together seasoned actor Lee Jin-wook and rising star Jung Chae-yeon in a fresh take on law firm politics and personal growth. The drama, set to premiere on August 2 at 10:40 PM KST, centers around the dynamic between a pragmatic veteran lawyer and an idealistic newcomer, played by Lee Jin-wook and Jung Chae-yeon respectively.
In the series, Jung Chae-yeon portrays Kang Hyo-min, a determined yet inexperienced rookie attorney at the prestigious law firm Yullim. Her character, while intellectually promising, struggles with the realities of office politics and social nuance. Opposite her is Yoon Seok-hoon, played by Lee Jin-wook, a sharp, no-nonsense senior partner known for his logical acumen and cold demeanor.
During the press conference held on July 31 at The Link Hotel Seoul, director Kim Jae-hong described the show as a “courtroom coming-of-age drama” that not only focuses on legal conflicts but also personal introspection and emotional healing. He emphasized that Beyond the Bar distinguishes itself with complex and emotionally charged legal cases, each serving as a mirror to the characters’ internal transformations.
Despite the 16-year age gap between the two leads, both actors emphasized the strong chemistry and professional synergy they shared on set. Jung Chae-yeon, who is taking on her first lawyer role, said she felt nervous but was reassured by Lee’s approachable demeanor and supportive attitude. “He made it so easy to act comfortably. I learned so much just by watching him,” she shared.
Lee Jin-wook praised Jung Chae-yeon’s preparation and dedication, adding that he was impressed with how she handled the legal jargon and emotionally demanding scenes. “Once we got started, I realized all I needed to do was match her energy,” he said.
The cast also includes Lee Hak-joo as a witty associate attorney and Jeon Hye-bin as a late-blooming divorce lawyer with a complex backstory. Together, the ensemble aims to deliver a nuanced portrayal of the legal profession beyond mere courtroom drama.
Following the success of Good Boy, director Kim Jae-hong expressed hopes for Beyond the Bar to stand on its own merit. “If we surpass 10% in viewership, I’d love to return for a second season,” he hinted.
