Manchester United’s efforts to revamp their midfield this summer have reached a frustrating standstill—and all eyes are on Casemiro.
The 33-year-old Brazilian midfielder, one of the club’s top earners at approximately £300,000 per week, has become both a financial and tactical hurdle. With just one year left on his contract, United are actively trying to offload him to free up space for new signings and comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR).
United Eager to Sell But the Market Isn’t Biting
Despite enlisting four agencies to find a potential buyer, Manchester United’s £15 million asking price has proven to be a significant roadblock. For many clubs, this figure is steep for a player seen as past his peak, especially given his wage demands and inconsistent form last season.
Although Casemiro showed flashes of his old brilliance during the Europa League knockout stages, he spent much of the season on the sidelines. He was quietly placed on the January transfer list, signaling the club’s long-term intentions.
Squad Dynamics and Tactical Concerns
New manager Rúben Amorim currently has five midfield options:
- Bruno Fernandes (shifted to a deeper role)
- Manuel Ugarte (a recent £50M signing)
- Kobbie Mainoo (groomed for a creative role)
- Toby Collyer (youth prospect with limited first-team experience)
- Casemiro (out of form and tactically uncertain)
Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen has departed, and Manchester United’s recruitment focus has shifted toward bolstering the attack. So far, the club has spent £133.5 million on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, with another striker still on the wishlist. An injury to goalkeeper André Onana has only added to the club’s concerns about squad depth.
Casemiro: A Shadow Over Old Trafford
Originally signed from Real Madrid in 2022 for an initial £60 million (rising to £70 million with add-ons), Casemiro had a standout debut season at United. However, a steep decline in form during his second year has cast doubt on his future.
Manager Amorim has been candid, stating he’s still “looking for the best way to utilize Casemiro.” Interestingly, the veteran midfielder was recently recalled to the Brazilian national team, ending an 18-month absence a sign he still holds value on the international stage.
As long as Casemiro remains on the books, Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is on hold. His massive wages, declining performance, and lack of buyers represent a serious bottleneck in the club’s summer transfer strategy.
Whether he leaves or stays, one thing is clear: Casemiro’s future must be resolved quickly if United are to move forward with their squad overhaul and regain competitiveness in the Premier League.
