Fantasy action film Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, starring Ahn Hyo-seop, Lee Min-ho as lead actors and also BLACKPINK’s Jisoo, has taken the Korean box office by storm, claiming the No.1 spot on its opening day. According to data from the Korean Film Council released on July 24, the movie attracted 122,491 moviegoers across South Korea on its first day of release (July 23), knocking F1: The Movie from its top position.

Based on the hugely popular web novel of the same name, Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy follows Kim Dok-ja, the sole reader of a long-running serialized novel, who suddenly finds himself in a world where the story becomes reality. Teaming up with the novel’s original protagonist Yoo Jung-hyuk and a band of survivors, they must fight to stay alive in a world teetering on destruction.

The film had already generated buzz before its release, having topped advance ticket sales five days in advance. Its strong start suggests it could enjoy a successful run, especially as weekend ticket sales are projected to rise sharply.

Meanwhile, F1: The Movie, which had held the top spot until July 22, fell to second place with 40,788 viewers on the same day. Still, the racing-themed film has held firm with a cumulative audience of over 2 million.

With its engaging storyline, star-studded cast, and a loyal fanbase from the original web novel, Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy is shaping up to be one of the summer’s standout hits in Korean cinemas.
