Emmy-nominated actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died at the age of 54. Warner tragically drowned while swimming with his family at Playa Grande beach in Costa Rica on July 22, 2025.

According to local reports, Warner was caught in a strong rip current while enjoying a family vacation. Despite efforts by beachgoers to rescue him, he was pulled from the water unresponsive. Paramedics from the Costa Rican Red Cross confirmed there were no signs of life upon arrival. His body was taken to the San Joaquín de Flores morgue, with the preliminary cause of death listed as drowning.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner began acting at just nine years old, but it was his breakout role as Theo Huxtable on the groundbreaking NBC sitcom The Cosby Show that cemented his legacy. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination in 1986 and made him a household name during the golden age of family sitcoms.

Warner’s post-Cosby career was equally impressive. He starred in Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000), Reed Between the Lines, and more recently The Resident. Beyond acting, he was a Grammy-winning musician and a respected director, praised for his contributions to both TV and music.
