The boundaries between fiction and reality are blurring — and TikTok is taking notice. At the center of the storm is Character.AI, a platform launched in 2021 and rolled out widely by September 2022, which allows users to engage in AI-powered conversations with fictional characters.

From Violet Sorrengail of Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series to Cal Calore from Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen, readers can now “chat” directly with the characters they once only read about. According to a recent video by Aveyard, the AI version of Cal Calore alone has been interacted with over 78,000 times — without her authorization.

Aveyard expressed concern over the unauthorized use of her characters: “I have not received any form of compensation, and I never gave permission for this. I will be taking action to remove my characters from Character.AI,” she stated.

A Divided BookTok

The controversy has exploded on TikTok, especially among BookTok creators. As of July 18, the hashtag #characterai had appeared in more than 975,100 videos.

User Suraka (17K followers) criticized the platform as a move away from authentic storytelling, calling it “an algorithmic substitute for genuine narrative.” Others like Sanziana-Dana (3.3K followers) and Emily (90.1K followers) praised the tool for making fictional worlds more immersive and participatory.

“Chatbots like Character.AI have become a powerful storytelling tool, allowing readers to become active participants in the worlds they love,” said Sanziana-Dana. Brittany (58.3K followers) agreed, saying the platform “extends fantasy world-building beyond the page, especially for fanfiction writers who want to explore character speech and behavior.”

BookToker Busayo (27K followers) noted that while platforms like AO3 and Wattpad used to be the go-to for fanfiction, “now readers are using Character.AI to test theories and character arcs in real-time.”

Between Creativity and Control

Despite its creative potential, critics argue Character.AI may be fueling harmful trends. “Fandoms have always been about deepening engagement with beloved stories — through fanfic, art, and discussion. But AI chatbots feel more like manufactured relationships than genuine creative expansion,” said Suraka. She warned that the platform is commercializing fictional bonds and encouraging obsessive behavior.

The emotional draw of Character.AI may lie in what it offers users psychologically. “It creates an illusion of control,” Suraka explained. Brittany added, “Users like it because they can control what the character says — down to the exact words.”

But the illusion has a price. “It fosters artificial intimacy and unhealthy expectations. These platforms aren’t helping users connect with stories — they’re simulating connections and encouraging isolation,” Suraka concluded.

As AI reshapes the way we interact with fiction, the question remains: is Character.AI the future of immersive storytelling — or a seductive detour from meaningful engagement?
